Phone Screen Prep: 7 Questions Recruiters Always Ask

The phone screen is a filter, not a final: twenty minutes to confirm you clear comp, location, timeline and basics. Recruiters ask the same seven questions because each maps to a knockout criterion. Answer each cleanly and the prize is the real interview; fumble logistics and skills never get heard.

The big four logistics

Comp expectations, location and relocation, start timeline, sponsorship needs. Prepare honest ranges and dates in advance — hesitation here reads as hiding. Logistics knockouts are final and impersonal; do not take them personally, do clear them fast.

Motivation and fit

'Walk me through your background' (your 90-second story, ending here), 'Why us?' (one specific company fact plus role fit), 'Why leaving?' (forward-looking, never bitter). Every answer should point at this role like an arrow.

Your turn — and the close

Always ask two: the timeline and the team structure. Then close: 'I am excited about this — what are the next steps?' Candidates who close get moved; candidates who just answer get filed.

Do this week

  • Write your comp range and start date before the call.
  • Prepare one specific 'why us' fact per company.
  • Stand up, smile, keep water and your resume in front of you.
  • Close every screen with the next-steps question.

Quick answers

How long should my answers be?

Thirty to sixty seconds each. Screens reward crispness; depth comes later.

What if my comp is above their range?

Say so early and kindly — it saves everyone weeks. Ask about total comp before withdrawing.

Do phone screens really matter?

They eliminate most candidates. Treat the screen as the interview before the interview.
